After the powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Northern Cebu on September 30, more sinkholes have been discovered in several towns.
Deep holes, some filled with water, were found in parts of Daanbantayan and San Remigio—prompting the evacuation of over a thousand residents from Sitio Sansan, Barangay Maño, to safer areas.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region 7 reports that over a hundred sinkholes may have formed in San Remigio alone following the quake.
Two technical teams from MGB-7 and the central office have been deployed to conduct a detailed geohazard assessment. Results will guide local governments in setting safety measures and possible relocation plans.
The DENR-7 also issued a Subsidence Threat Advisory covering San Remigio, Medellin, Bogo City, Tabogon, and Daanbantayan due to the high risk of ground collapse.
Authorities warn that continued rain and aftershocks may worsen the situation, as monitoring operations remain ongoing to ensure public safety. | BChannel news | 📸 Rai Felicano
