Batangas City, December 8, 2023 – The Province of Batangas marked its 442nd foundation day with a grand celebration at the Regina Reyes Mandanas Memorial DREAM Zone, Capitol Site, Batangas City.
The event showcased the province’s vibrant history, diverse culture, and ongoing development initiatives.
Themed “Batangas: Melting pot of Rich Diversity, Gateway to Prosperity,” the festivities commenced with a heartfelt Reading of the Foundation Day Declaration by Batangas Vice Governor Mark Leviste. The declaration set the tone for a day of reflection and celebration of Batangas’s rich heritage.
Batangas Governor Hermilando Mandanas, VG Leviste accompanied by members of the Provincial Council, took center stage during the program. One of the significant moments was the unveiling of the new provincial flag, symbolizing a renewed commitment to the province’s values and aspirations.
A crucial part of the event focused on Batangas’s natural wonders, as dossiers on the Verde Island Passage and Taal Volcano Protected Landscape were submitted and presented to the Philippine National Commission for UNESCO. The province is seeking UNESCO recognition for these areas to be included in the prestigious list of World Heritage Sites.
The program also witnessed the swearing-in of newly elected officers of the Batangas History Society, reinforcing the commitment to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the province.
The heart of the celebration centered on honoring outstanding individuals from various sectors through the Dangal ng Batangan Awards. Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales stood out as the 2023 Dangal ng Batangan – Eminent Person awardee, recognized for his significant contributions to the community.
Other awardees included John Peter Caringal for Dance, Architect Edwin Barrion for Architecture, Noriel Castillo for Visual Arts, and Lionel Nestor Guico for Music. The awards for Public Service were conferred upon Retired 2nd Lieutenant Lilian Marquez Magsino for Military Service, Dr. Alfred Buenafe for Medical Service, and General Gregorio Pio Punzalan Catapang Jr. for his distinguished Military Service.
Prominent figures in attendance included Anakalusagan Congressman Rey Florence Reyes and Lipa City Mayor Eric Africa, who received a Special Citation for Social Welfare and Development. The event brought together officials and staff of the Provincial Government of Batangas, as well as representatives from local government units, national agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
The master of ceremony, Ms. Steph Landicho-Ona, skillfully guided the audience through the diverse and engaging program, ensuring that the celebration of Batangas’s 442nd foundation day was a memorable and meaningful experience for all.
