U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo said on the 22nd that the United States will impose sanctions on more than 500 targets on the 23rd to commemorate the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, Adeyemo stated that this operation, in cooperation with other countries, will target Russia’s military-industrial complex and third-country companies that help Russia obtain the supplies it wants. And Washington is trying to hold Russia responsible for the war and the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
The sanctions are intended to ensure that Russia cannot obtain the materials it needs to build its weapons and slow down the revenue it needs to support its economy and manufacture its weapons.
The U.S. Treasury Department said in December that Russia’s economy was hit by sanctions and would shrink 2.1% in 2022.
International Monetary Fund spokesperson Julie Kozak also said on Thursday that Russia is currently in a war economy, with military spending increasing weapons production and inflation still rising. This statement shows that the previous sanctions were effective against Russia, and now the newly added 500 target sanctions are expected to curb the war.
