Batangas Media-Citizen Council Launches with Oath Taking and Seminars on Cyber Security and Journalism Ethics

Batangas City, November 10, 2023 — In a landmark event, the Batangas Media-Citizen Council (BMCC) officially launched and swore in its Board of Trustees and Officers in a ceremony organized under the auspices of the Philippine Press Institute (PPI) and International Media Support. The event, held at the prestigious Pontefino Hotel in Batangas City, brought together media professionals, civic leaders, and esteemed guests to mark the beginning of a new era in media-citizen collaboration.

The event commenced with an opening prayer led by Rev. Fr. Leonido C. Dolor, setting a solemn tone for the proceedings. Ariel Sebellino, the Executive Director of PPI, delivered the opening remarks, expressing the institute’s commitment to fostering responsible and ethical journalism.

Joyce Babe Pañares, the Seminar Director of PPI and Managing Director of Manila Standard, provided a comprehensive overview of the Batangas Media-Citizen Councils. Pañares emphasized the importance of media-citizen collaboration in promoting transparency, accountability, and responsible reporting.

The presentation of the BMCC Board of Trustees and Officers was skillfully conducted by Joenald Medina Rayos, the PPI Trustee for Luzon and President of the Batangas Press Club. The distinguished individuals entrusted with leading the BMCC were introduced, showcasing a diverse group of professionals dedicated to advancing media ethics and citizen engagement.

The oath-taking ceremony, a pivotal moment in solidifying the commitment of the BMCC’s leadership, was led by Batangas 5th District Congressman Marvey Mariño. Congressman Mariño emphasized the crucial role that the media-citizen partnership plays in shaping public discourse and fostering an informed citizenry.

Following the official proceedings, two highly relevant seminars were conducted to enhance the skills and knowledge of media practitioners. Ms. Len Olea from the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) led a session on “Cyber Security and Digital Hygiene.” Her presentation provided valuable insights into the ever-evolving landscape of digital threats faced by journalists and media organizations.

The second seminar, titled “Ethics in/and Journalism,” was presented by Prof. Yvonne Chua from the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communications. Prof. Chua delved into the ethical considerations and responsibilities that journalists must uphold in their pursuit of truth.

The Batangas Media-Citizen Council’s launch and the accompanying seminars underscore the commitment of media professionals to uphold the highest standards of journalism while actively engaging with the community.
