Mayoral candidate Rolan “Kerwin” Espinosa was shot while campaigning in Barangay Tinag-an, Albuera around 4:30 PM on Thursday, April 10, according to the Philippine National Police in Leyte.
Espinosa, along with his slate, was meeting with residents at a covered court when gunfire erupted. A minor was also injured during the incident. Both were rushed to the hospital.
Espinosa, a self-confessed drug personality during former President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration, had most of his drug-related cases dismissed.
COMELEC Chairman George Garcia condemned the incident, calling it a possible case of election-related violence. “Election is never about killing but about giving life to our democracy. Ballots, not bullets, is the answer,” he said.
The Albuera police are now investigating and have launched a hot pursuit operation to catch the suspects. | BChannel NEWS
