A major murder occurred in Ottawa, the capital of Canada, a city where many Hong Kong people have immigrated. Six people were killed in a residential building, including four children.
According to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation News, after police received multiple reports of a crime at about 11 pm on Wednesday night, they found six bodies, four of them children, in a townhouse near Barrhaven, Ottawa.
In the latest update on Thursday afternoon, local police clarified that the victims were stabbed to death, with six dead and one injured. According to police announcements, the six dead included four children (aged 7, 4, 2 and 2.5 months old), and their 35-year-old mother.
The sixth victim was a 40-year-old male acquaintance who lived in the same residence. The injured person who was sent to the hospital for rescue was the father of four children.
Police announced that the suspect, a 19-year-old international student from Sri Lanka, was charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. The police did not disclose the relationship between the suspect and the deceased’s family or the motive for the crime.
Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said on social media that this was one of the most shocking incidents of violence in Ottawa’s history.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke of the murder in a speech to reporters, describing it as a “horrible tragedy.”
